SmartSky Presents the Future of Turbulence Avoidance for Business Aviation at the Connected Aviation Intelligence Event

Press Releases

Research Triangle, NC – November 30, 2020 – SmartSky Networks’ Vice President of Digital Solutions, Brit Wanick, will discuss the value of real-time crowdsourced turbulence data for business aviation at the upcoming Connected Aviation Intelligence virtual event on December 2 at 1030 a.m. EDT. Wanick will introduce SmoothSkyTM, part of the company’s ongoing collaboration with the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the global airline trade association. He will highlight how live weather and turbulence data collected from the international commercial airline fleet and distributed through a new application, SmoothSky, can now help the business aviation market find calmer skies.

“Commercial air carriers using the IATA Turbulence Aware Program have seen improved safety and efficiency across their operations, and we are excited to exclusively bring these benefits to business aviation,” said Wanick. “SmartSky’s partnerships and unique offerings allows us to be a leader in connecting the aviation ecosystem for an enhanced flying experience.”

SmoothSky is the first real-time crowdsourced turbulence avoidance application for business aviation and was created by feeding IATA’s globally collected live airline data into SmartSky’s Skytelligence® platform, which then enables business aviation pilots and dispatchers to use live data beyond forecasts and subjective pilot reports. SmoothSky’s real-time information enables route optimization and better turbulence-management in pre-flight planning as well as using it continuously while airborne.

About SmartSky

SmartSky Networks, based in North Carolina’s Research Triangle, was formed in 2011 by senior telecommunications and aviation executives seeking to transform aviation through disruptive communications technologies and related tools. SmartSky is rolling out its innovative air-to-ground network in 2021. The network takes advantage of patented spectrum reuse, advanced beamforming technologies and 60 MHz of spectrum for significantly enhanced connectivity. SmartSky’s network uniquely enables a productive experience in the air similar to on the ground, including unmatched capacity for data transmissions both to and from the aircraft. This real-time, low latency, bidirectional data link makes SmartSky the best in-flight user experience, and a key enabler for the new and enhanced apps, services, and hardware.
